6.3 earthquake Japan's southwestern Ryuku Islands

Tremor shakes Japan's southern islands

A magnitude-6.3 earthquake struck Monday near Japan's southwestern Ryuku Islands, touching off a tsunami warning.

The United States Geological Survey said the quake was centred about 115 kilometres east of Ishigaki-jima in the Ryukyu Islands, or about 320 kilometres southwest of Naha, Okinawa.

Reuters reported that Japanese television stations were warning of a possible 50-centimetre tsunami.

The quake's depth was about 35.9 kilometres, the USGS said.
